HIGHLIGHTS

The weavers who could make a robe in the shortest time wins. The robe will be offered to the Buddha image in the pagoda.

This tradition that has been preserved for centuries is held in November at Shwedagon Pagoda, Yangon, and other pagodas throughout the country. The purpose of this contest is to determine the weavers who could make a robe in the shortest period of time. The robe must be completed within one night, as it is offered to Buddha’s image next morning. Weavers form groups and work together to weave the robes. Contestants who could not finish weaving the robe at night are considered unsuccessful. The contest is unique as it allows people to do good deeds in the religion and to preserve the long-maintained robe-weaving tradition.
