This Full Moon Festival is celebrated throughout the country in November. It coincides with the end of the rainy season. During the festival, 9,999 candles are lit by locals to be offered to the Koehtatkyi Pagoda in Yangon. The number “9” is believed to be a great number and that it would ward off enemies and diseases. Traditional music is played for the Buddha and the candles are lit in several different locations simultaneously. In the end, the pagoda is beautifully lit by thousands of candles. Tourists love to attend this festival just to see the magnificent view.
